A month-end close checklist you can reuse

A consistent checklist is the cheapest way to shorten the close. This one covers the steps most finance teams repeat every month, in a sensible order.

Payables

  • Enter and approve all invoices received for the period
  • Reconcile large vendor statements
  • Record accruals for goods and services received but not billed

Cash and receivables

  • Reconcile bank and card accounts
  • Apply customer payments
  • Review aging for items to follow up or reserve

Review

  • Review variances against budget and prior month
  • Lock the period and archive supporting documents

Frequently asked questions

How long should a month-end close take?

It varies by size and complexity. Teams that reconcile continuously and automate matching typically close faster than those who start after month-end.
